Department of English
About US
The Department of English came into existence in 2003. The Department has the distinction of being the first Program to be launched when the South Campus, University of Kashmir was commissioned. Since its inception the Department has increased its intake capacity from around twenty students to the current number of sixty students. That makes the Department one of the largest among all the Departments of English in Jammu and Kashmir. The students from across the state are admitted to the Department after qualifying the Common Entrance Test conducted by the University of Kashmir.
The Department offers teaching courses for the award of the two years Master of Arts Degree. Besides the British canonical texts, the Department offers courses which cover the non-canonical and skill-oriented dimensions. Lately, the Department eagerly undertook the task of adopting the interdisciplinary approach under the new Choice Based Credit System implemented by the University of Kashmir. For the students of non-English Departments, our Department offers courses like Communication Skills, Editing Skills, and Translation Skills. The Research scholars will be taken up by the faculty members in the near future, to which end the registration of the faculty members has commenced.
Presently, the Department has four permanently faculty members and two contractual teachers. The faculty members have not only national but also international experience in research and teaching. With their respective specialisations the teaching staff combines innovative pedagogy with traditional rigor of scholarship to build the knowledge base of their students both in and out of the classroom.
The Department organises extra-curricular activities, in addition to lectures and interactive sessions with eminent national and international scholars and writers. The Department has been able to nurture the talents of the students over the years. Our students have qualified NET, SET examinations besides being enrolled in various PhD Programs outside the state.
In the near future the Department will start a Magazine which will serve as a platform for exchange and expression of ideas for students and faculty. We are also planning to institute some Prizes in various genres to cultivate the talents of students. We also plan to create linkages between the Department and the society outside the South Campus by launching short term courses in skill development in English language and literature for interested sections of society.
